Average annual forest-related carbon flux in Brazil 2001-2022
Forest-related greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in Brazil averaged 1.6 billion metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO₂e) per year between 2001 and 2022. Forests also removed roughly 1.8 GtCO₂e per year on average during the same time frame, representing a net carbon sink of -141 MtCO₂e per year. In 2022, GHG emissions from land use change and deforestation in Brazil totaled 1.1 GtCO₂e. The main driver of forest-related GHG emissions in Brazil is commodity driven deforestation.
