Creams and lotions

Creams and lotions are a topical preparation which is usually applied to external skin with bare hands, cotton wool, gauze or a clean cloth. These creams and lotions are intended to be applied to unbroken skin, blemishes or ailments to help smooth, re-hydrate, soften or even disinfect the epidermis. As a result these products are one of the leading health and body care product segments sold throughout the modern world.

In 2012, the Aveeno Active Naturals Daily Moisturizing brand had a sales share of 4.3 percent in the United States; which results in approximately USD 41.8 million worth of sales. The Aveeno brand is owned by Johnson & Johnson, a multi-national medical devices, pharmaceutical and consumer packaged goods manufacturer. In 2012, Johnson & Johnson was ranked as the leading hand and body lotion vendor in the United States with sales that amounted to USD 148.8 million, narrowly beating out Beiersdorf (USD 145.6 million) and Kao Brands Co. (USD 141.3 million) respectively.

As a result, the skin care product category was ranked fourth amongst the leading health and beauty care product categories in the United States, generating a total of approximately USD 2.27 billion in sales. The slow recovering economy has had some impact on skin care sales, as well as the entire HBC category. However, skin care is a need-based and an extremely high penetration category with products that generate frequent and continued usage, which helps insulate the category to some degree.
