Leading auction houses worldwide in 2018 by fine art revenue British auction house Christie’s generated fine art auction revenue of approximately five billion U.S. dollars in 2018, ranking it as the top auction house in fine art sales worldwide.  Popularity of fine art in the U.S.

Fine art is a form of art that was developed primarily for beauty and aesthetic value rather than to serve any practical function. Americans are apparently very fond of this art form, the United States accounting for approximately 38 percent of the total fine art auction revenue worldwide in 2018 - making it the leading market worldwide for fine art auction sales. Ranking second was China, which had a market share of around 29 percent of fine art auction revenue worldwide in that year.

 Christie’s vs. Sotheby’s

In 2018, London-based auction house Christie’s sold over 16 thousand fine art lots . Comparatively, its closest competitor Sotheby’s sold only around 13 and a half thousand fine art lots in that year. Other leading auction houses in terms of worldwide revenue as well as number of sold lots include China Guardian, Poly Group, Bonhams, and Phillips.
