About This Statistic
This statistic shows the age distribution of active social media users worldwide as of the third quarter of 2014, sorted by platform. During the survey period, it was found that 34 percent of Instagram users were between 25 and 34 years old.
Facebook has the largest percentage of older adult users between the ages of 35 and 64, more than any other social media platform. Instagram and Pinterest are tied with the largest number of users in the 25-44 age category and Tumblr has the largest percentage of users for those between the ages of 16 and 24. Facebook has acquired a good amount of older users as precisely 46 percent of Facebook users are 35 or older.
In comparison, the vast majority of people below the age of 35 are active Tumblr and Instagram users. Tumblr was launched in 2007, in New York, and the younger and Millennial generations have taken interest in the platform quite quickly. It is a microblogging platform and social networking site. However, only 15 percent of active users report using it more than once per day with 48 percent of respondents reporting that they use it less than weekly. In comparison, 56 percent of active Facebook users use Facebook more than once per day. Instagram has more even use with about a 25 percent share of active users for each of the four frequency levels: more than once a day, daily, weekly and less than weekly. While Tumblr has taken the younger generation by storm in the United States with 39 percent of all Tumblr traffic comes from the United States, the rest of the world has been slower to pick up on this new social networking trend.
