Division distribution of Barclays group global employees 2014-2018

Barclays is one of the ten largest banks in Europe in terms of total assets. It is also among the European banks with strongest international presence, operating in 50 countries worldwide.

Number of employees in Barclays Group

The most populous division of the bank over the years was Barclays Core, with the number of employees (equivalent full-time) at 75 thousand people in 2014, increasing to 78 thousand in 2015, but afterwards decreasing again to 73 thousand in 2016. As of 2017, the Barclays group no longer has a core or non-core division as well as the discontinuation of its Africa banking division. The Barclays group now only reports under the international, UK and head office divisions. This is the main reason behind the huge increase in the number of full-time employees working at Barclays head office as of 2017. The fact is that Barclays has made a decrease in the number of full-time employees with the UK alone seeing a cut of approximately 13.4 thousand between 2016 and 2018.

Number of employees in Lloyds Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland

Similar decrease in headcount in employees can also be observed in the Lloyds Banking Group and Royal Bank of Scotland. For example, between 2007 and 2018, employment in the Royal Bank of Scotland dropped more than three times. These were also the years with highest and lowest headcount respectively.

According to the source: "On 1 March 2016, Barclays announced its intention to sell down the Group’s interest in BAGL (Africa Banking division). On 5 May 2016 Barclays executed the first tranche of the sell down of the Group’s interest in BAGL with the sale of 12.2 percent of BAGL’s issued share capital. Following completion of the sale, Barclays’ holding represents 50.1 percent of BAGL’s issued share capital."

* With the closure of Non-Core we no longer have a Core and Non-Core distinction within the Group and hence the previous target of Group RoTE to converge with Core RoTE has been updated. The Non-Core segment was closed on 1 July 2017. Financial results up until 30 June 2017 are reflected in the Non-Core segment for 2017

** As a result of the establishment of the Group Service Company in September 2017, employees who are now employed by the Group Service Company and who were previously allocated to, or were within, Barclays UK and Barclays International are now reported in Head Office.

*** Number of employees included 40,800 in relation to Africa Banking for 2016.
