This statistic shows the number of candidates who entered for European language exams at Higher level from the academic year 2008/09 to 2017/18, by subject. French was by far the most popular choice of European language, which may well be because it is offered in the majority of Scottish schools. However, entries for Spanish language exams have experienced the highest increase during that time, growing by roughly 48.1 percent, while entries for German language exams have decreased by 16.9 percent. The sharp decline in European language exam entries in 2015 is due to the overall decline in student numbers in that year.
