Cosmetics sector distribution in France 2021, by product category

Within the cosmetics sector in France, the segment of skincare products is the most valuable. It represented more than one-quarter quarter of the sector’s total revenue in 2021, whereas make-up products accounted for around eight percent. Furthermore, the cosmetic market generated about 21 percent of its sales from perfumes.

Cosmetic consumption among the French

When it comes to beauty and personal care products, nearly 80 percent of French consumers in 2022 declared using personal care and hygiene products the most, such as bath and shower products or deodorants.  Moreover, it appears that the leading purchase criteria when shopping for such products was quality that year, with almost 60 percent of respondents choosing it. Skin compatibility and brand followed. In 2021, the leading brand among French buyers was Signal.

Natural cosmetics and DIY

Natural cosmetics have been experiencing an increase in popularity over the last years, even in France. In 2021, nearly 50 percent of French beauty shoppers stated that they had purchased natural cosmetics in the previous 12 months.
In addition to this, DIY (do-it-yourself) practices regarding beauty products, while still minor, are also appearing in the habits of consumers in France: 11 percent of surveyed households stated making their own beauty products in 2020, and 30 percent of them reported wanting to do so.
