Volume of wine produced in Hungary 2010-2022

According to preliminary results, the volume of wine produced in Hungary in 2022 amounted to approximately 2.5 million hectoliters. This represented a slight decrease compared to the year before.

Wine regions of Hungary

Out of the 22 wine regions located in Hungary, Tokaj is without question the most renowned, as it is where Tokaji aszú, the oldest botrytized wine in the world originates from. In 2021, the historical region located in north-eastern Hungary produced nearly 140 thousand hectoliters of wine. Besides Tokaj, Hungary’s most famous wine regions are Eger and Villány, with the former producing 282 thousand hectoliters of wine in 2021.

Wine drinking habits in Hungary

According to a study conducted in 2019, over one-third of surveyed Hungarians purchased wine two or three times a month, with a further 25 percent of the respondents buying wine at least once a week. When it came to their favorite type of wine, over half of Hungarian survey participants stated they enjoyed drinking red wine the most.
