Supplementary notes

Data provided by Statista Market Insights are estimates.

Definition:

Spirits include alcoholic beverages that have been produced through the distillation of wine, fermented fruits, or grains. Due to the distillation process, the alcohol content of spirits is much higher than that of most wines and beers, typically ranging from 20% to 50% alcohol by volume (ABV).

Structure:

The Spirits segment is further divided into the following subsegments:

  • The Whisky segment includes spirits on a grain basis that have been aged in wooden casks for a duration of at least three years.
  • The Vodka segment includes spirits based on grain and/or potatoes.
  • The Rum segment includes spirits based on sugar cane.
  • The Gin segment includes spirits based on juniper berries.
  • The Brandy segment includes spirits based on fermented fruit juice.
  • The Liqueurs & Other Spirits segment includes all other spirits not previously mentioned as well as ready-to-drink (RTD) cocktails.

Additional Information:

The market comprises revenue and average revenue per capita, volume and average volume per capita, price per unit (per liter), and sales channels. The market encompasses sales (at-home sales, out-of-home sales, and eCommerce sales) to private end customers (B2C).

  • The at-home market encompasses sales via super- and hypermarkets, convenience stores or similar channels.
  • The out-of-home market encompasses sales to hotels, restaurants, catering, cafés, bars, and similar hospitality service establishments.
  • The eCommerce share includes the sale of physical goods via digital channels. However, online sales attributable to out-of-home consumption of alcoholic beverages are not included. Online sales are also displayed in the eCommerce subsegment Alcoholic Drinks of Digital Market Insights.

The price per unit refers to liter as a base unit, and the average price is a combination of the at-home and out-of-home prices, including all sales and consumption taxes. At-home and out-of-home prices are displayed separately in the lowest segment levels of the Alcoholic Drinks market. Per capita figures refer to the whole population.
Key players include Diageo, Pernod Ricard, and Kweichow Moutai.
