Age distribution of the population in Italy 2002-2020

In the past years, the share of people aged over 65 years grew constantly in Italy. In 2020, 23.1 percent of the Italian inhabitants were estimated to be aged 65 years and older. Moreover, 63.9 percent were aged between 15 and 64 years and 13 percent of Italians were up to 14 years old.
Indeed, the birth rate in Italy decreased over the past years. In 2018, roughly 7.3 children were born per 1,000 inhabitants, about two infants less than in 2002.
