Number of elderly one-person households in Japan 1980-2015

In 2015, almost six million households in Japan were elderly one-person households with the member being 65 years of age or older. The Japanese archipelago is facing an increasingly aging society paired with a lower number of marriages, which affected in particular the female population in 2015, who made up around four million of the elderly one person households in the country.
