Horse meat production volume in Japan 2013-2022
Around 4.87 thousand tons of horse meat were produced in Japan in 2022, up from around 4.55 thousand tons in the previous year. While horse meat is an uncommon ingredient in the Japanese diet, dishes including horse meat are commonly found in bars or barbecue restaurants. Basashi, for example, is thinly sliced horse meat served and consumed raw.
