Consumption of roasted coffee per capita in Finland 2011-2021

In 2021, coffee consumption in Finland declined from the previous years, averaging 9.4 kilograms of roasted coffee per person. Over the past decade, the average coffee consumption per person stayed steadily around ten kilograms each year. Finland ranks among the world's top coffee consuming nations per capita.

Finnish coffee culture

Coffee drinking is deeply rooted in the Finnish society, although the country is not widely known for its coffee culture. Finns typically drink three to five cups of light roasted filter coffee on an average day. Most of the coffee is being consumed at home or workplace, and days are often divided by coffee breaks. The most trusted coffee brand among Finnish consumers is Juhla Mokka by Paulig. Around 80 percent of all coffee consumed is light roasted, although dark roasted coffee has increased its popularity.

Growing market

While the average coffee consumption per capita has remained relatively stable in Finland, the coffee import volume has increased in recent years. The volume of green coffee imports into Finland reached a peak of 75 thousand metric tons in 2019. Around 80 percent of green coffee taken to production in the Finnish roasteries was imported from Brasil, Colombia and Honduras. Meanwhile, the import volume of roasted coffee amounted to over 11.5 thousand metric tons.
