Fish is an essential element of the Spanish cuisine, which uses diverse sea products to add that Mediterranean flavor that many people around the world praise and love. Within this range of diversity, sole ranked as the most expensive fish Spaniards could purchase in 2021, with an average price per kilogram of 11.74 euros. In contrast, sardines was the cheapest fish available in Spain.
Spain: the largest European fish consumer
Spaniards are big fans of fresh fish, and this can be proved by just taking a look at the latest figures, which position Spain as the largest consumer of fish in the European Union, at over 600 thousand metric tons in 2016, nearly doubling the numbers of Italy, which ranked second at 325 thousand metric tons. The average Spanish consumed more than ten kilograms of fresh fish in 2017, which is a significant larger number amount than that of frozen fish, which stood at approximately 2.3 kilograms per person the same year.
Seafood: another one of Spain’s favourites
Seafood is also widely used in the Spanish cuisine, present in some of their best-known dishes such as paella. The most expensive crustaceans that Spaniards could purchase were prawns and shrimp, which cost on average 11 euros per kilogram in 2019. Mussels were much cheaper in contrast, at only 2.77 euros per kilogram that same year.
