Production of yarn in India FY 2011-2020

Production of yarn in India amounted to about five billion kilograms in the fiscal year 2020. The volume of yarn produced had consistently increased since the fiscal year 2011. Cotton yarn was the largest share at over 54 percent in yarn production during the fiscal year 2020. In 2021, the wholesale price index (WPI) for cotton yarn was 114.2, which was a decrease compared to the previous year.

Textile industry in India 

The textile and apparel industry contributed about five percent to India’s GDP. India is the world’s sixth-largest exporter of textiles and apparel. It was also the second-largest employer after agriculture. About 12 percent of the export earnings also came from this sector. In addition, the country was the second-largest exporter of textile yarn worldwide in 2020. In fiscal year 2021, the export value of cotton spun yarn amounted to 2.8 billion U.S. dollars from India. Ready-made garments of cotton had the largest value, worth seven billion U.S. dollars in exports in 2021.

 Diversifying into the digital age 

  With strengths ranging from traditional handloom, handicrafts, hand-spun, wool as well as silk products, the industry was estimated to reach over 220 billion U.S. dollars by 2021. The growth of organized retail and e-commerce with an increased focus on technical textiles is likely to propel the industry towards the anticipated growth direction.
