Number of crown court cases in England and Wales 2010-2019

In the third quarter of 2019 there were an additional 27.4 thousand crown court cases in England and Wales, and 26.2 thousand court cases that were closed. With new court cases outstripping the number of closed cases, the backlog of court cases grew slightly in 2019, and reached 33.8 thousand in the most recent quarter. The current backlog of cases is still relatively small compared to the peak seen in late 2014 when there were over 55.1 thousand outstanding crown court cases, which was brought by a spike in new criminal court cases in 2013.

Number of receipts, disposals and outstanding cases in the crown court of England and Wales from the first quarter of 2010 to the third quarter of 2019
