Brazil: murders of activists and environmentalists 2013-2018
In 2018, at least 20 land activists or environmentalists were murdered in Brazil. A year earlier, the homicide of 57 citizens fighting in land conflicts or for environmental causes had been documented, which made it the deadliest year for Brazil based on this type of politically-motivated murder since 2013. In 2018, Guatemala was also among the most unsafe countries for environmental defenders.
