Duke Energy is one of the largest utilities in the United States along with other big-name agencies such as Southern Company and NextEra Energy. Duke energy is an electric power holding company headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina with almost 2 million retail customers. Duke Energy serves several different states across Eastern United States, including Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, North Carolina, Ohio, and South Carolina. In the Midwest, the majority of Duke Energy’s generation is sourced from coal, natural gas or oil. In the Carolinas, about half of the company’s generation comes from nuclear plants, although, the company decided to exclude new nuclear plans in the future. Duke Energy has several subsidiaries, including Duke Energy Renewables and Duke Energy International. Duke Energy also has several business segments, the largest being the electric utilities and infrastructure segment.

Duke Energy has made strides towards being a more renewable energy-focused company. In 2019, Duke Energy Renewables acquired a 200-megawatt solar project in Texas and will be the largest renewable system owned by the company. About 13 percent of Duke Energy’s generation comes from renewable sources. The renewables subsidiary of Duke Energy operates over 50 solar farms in the United States and provides renewable options for the residential, commercial, and industrial sectors. Most of the company’s solar energy portfolio is located in the southeastern United States. Duke Energy Renewable’s goals include the purchase and ownership of 8 gigawatts of wind, solar, and biomass energy by 2020.
