Mobile internet providers and trafficThe Hungarian mobile internet market has been dominated by Telekom, with a 43 percent market share in 2022. Moreover, the company was the first to launch commercial 5G services in the country. Yettel, formerly known as Telenor Hungary, is considered the second largest mobile phone operator and recorded a revenue worth 545 million euros in 2021.
Mobile internet data traffic reached nearly 246 million gigabytes in the second quarter of 2022, which represented an increase of 294 percent compared to the corresponding period in 2018. Moreover, mobile devices accounted for over 59 percent of the online traffic in 2022, making them the most widely used connected device, followed by desktop computers. However, in case of certain websites, significant differences can be noticed in device usage. In other words, while in November 2021 less than 24 percent of youtube.com’s traffic was generated by mobile devices, the biggest share of Hungarian news portals’ traffic originated from smartphones.
Apps and gamesWhen it comes to the most widely-used apps, in March 2023, the second-hand shopping app Vinted ranked first based on the number of downloads, followed by TikToK. During the same period of time, Google One was the leading mobile application in Hungary considering its revenue.
In 2021, almost every fourth Hungarian gamer played games on their smartphones. Regarding mobile game applications, as of March 2023, Word of Wonders: Crossword was the most downloaded free mobile game in the country. At the same time, Gaminator Casino Slots was the highest grossing mobile game in Hungary with a revenue of 234 thousand U.S. dollars.
