Mobile internet usage in Hungary - statistics & facts

Over the past decade, mobile phones have become more than mere communication devices. Nowadays, portable telephones are used for entertainment, work, and accessing information by millions of people every day. The number of smartphone users in Hungary reached over seven million in 2021 and is expected to increase during the next years. Mobile internet usage figures also seem to follow a similar trend, with approximately seven million Hungarian users registered in 2021.

As of 2020, mobile internet service providers’ revenue totaled 176 billion Hungarian forints. The Hungarian mobile internet market has been dominated by Telekom, with a 43 percent market share in 2020. The telecommunication service provider’s success is not surprising, considering that it enables faster downloads and uploads than its competitors. Moreover, Telekom was the first telecommunications company in the country to launch a 5G network in 2020.

Mobile internet data traffic reached nearly 122 million gigabytes in the second quarter of 2020, which represented an increase of over 100 percent compared to the corresponding period in 2018. Moreover, mobile devices accounted for nearly 45 percent of the online traffic in 2020, making them the second most widely used connected device, following desktop computers. However, in case of certain websites, significant differences can be noticed in device usage. In other words, while in January 2021 less than 20 percent of youtube.com’s traffic was generated by mobile devices, the biggest share of Hungarian news portals’ traffic originated from smartphones.

When it comes to the most widely-used apps, in May 2021, the shopping app SHEIN ranked first based on the number of downloads, followed by QR & Barcode Reader. During the same period of time, Google One was the leading mobile in Hungary considering its revenue.
In 2020, every fourth Hungarian gamer played games on their smartphones. Regarding mobile game applications, as of May 2021, Hair Challenge was the most downloaded free mobile game in the country. At the same time, Gaminator Casino Slots - Play Slot Machines 777 was the highest grossing mobile game in Hungary with a revenue of 147 thousand U.S. dollars.
