Video on demand in Hungary - statistics & facts

Traditional television broadcasting is still the primary channel for video content consumption in Hungary. However, video streaming service usage is slowly gaining popularity. As of 2021, the majority of the adult population watched TV every day, whereas a significantly lower share were video on demand market users. Video streaming revenue reached 20 million U.S. dollars in 2021 and it is expected to total 25 million by 2027, making it the leading segment of the Hungarian video on demand market.



Which are the leading VOD platforms and content types?

In recent years, an increasing number of video streaming service providers have entered the Hungarian market. However, in 2023, Netflix was still the most popular streaming platform in the country, accounting for a market share of 33 percent. Amazon Prime Video followed while HBO Max ranked third based on the measured interest in streaming services on JustWatch. When it comes to the type of content consumed, Hungarians primarily watched comedies, dramas, and crime shows on Netflix in 2023. At the same time, sci-fi, drama, and superhero-related content was HBO Max viewers’ most common choice.

Who subscribes to video streaming services?

In 2021, approximately 14 percent of Hungarian households subscribed to video streaming services, while the highest VOD usage rate was recorded among households consisting of economically active adults with children. By comparison, the lowest penetration rate was recorded among elderly respondents. During the same year, the highest share of VOD users was between the ages of 35 to 44 years old, while 25 to 34 years olds constituted the second largest group of the platform’s users. Video streaming service usage was the most common among Hungarians with higher educational degrees, measuring at over 50 percent, while less than 40 percent of the population with primary school degrees as their highest education level subscribed to a video streaming platform.
