Despite its increasingly diversified business, Amazon remains an e-commerce company at its core – and a highly successful one. According to estimates from Statista’s ecommerceDB, a database profiling more than 20,000 online stores worldwide, Amazon is by far the largest online shopping destination in the U.S. with net sales (excl. third-party sales) amounting to $73.75 billion in 2019.
As our chart illustrates, no company comes even close to matching Amazon’s footprint in the U.S. e-commerce landscape. Second-placed Walmart sold $19.61 billion worth of merchandise online last year, which is less than a third of Amazon’s haul.
