Worldwide cancer drug sales are already way ahead of other drug classes and the revenue generated by them is expected to grow even larger by 2030. This is according to data by Statista Market Insights.
Oncology drugs reached $232.5 billion in sales in 2026, more than double that of the next item on the list, anti-diabetic drugs at almost $92 billion. As GLP-1 shots developed for diabetes but used for weight loss are booming, the segment experienced another push and overtook vaccines, which are expected to earn $65 billion dollars in sales this year, down from peaks during the coronvirus pandemic. Another drug class growing in sales are immunosuppresants, expected to bring in revenues of $72 billion this year.
By 2030, cancer drug sales are expected to reach $294 billion annually. Considering worldwide drug sales, cancer drugs are expected to approach 20 percent of the market that year.
Cancer drugs are extremely pricey and therefore generate high revenues, with the cost of cancer treatment at above $100,000 per patient. Cancer rates themselves are also rising due to longer lifespans. Money funneled into cancer research means new medications are released, which improves cancer treatment but likely also increases its price as pharmaceutical companies charge a premium for newly researched and released drugs.
