Food self-sufficiency ratio in Japan FY 2018, by product In fiscal year 2018, the agricultural sector in Japan was able to cover the market demand for mandarin oranges (mikan) fully through domestic crop production, with a food self-sufficiency ratio of 100 percent. In contrast, only six percent of soybeans consumed in the same period were domestically produced, with a large majority being imports to Japan. The food self-sufficiency ratio indicates the share of food consumed in Japan that is covered by domestic production.
