Prison population in Russia 2010-2017, by nationality The number of Russian nationals in the country's prisons sharply increased by over 72 thousand people between 2016 and 2017, after a continuous gradual decrease in the national prison population which was observed since 2010. Regarding foreign prisoners, their count also significantly increased over the latest year observed, exceeding 39 thousand in 2017.
