Value of banking M&A deals worldwide 1985-2020
2020 was a record year for the number of mergers and acquisitions in the global banking sector, but this did not translate into larger deals. The value of all deals completed in 2020 only barely surpassed 100 billion U.S. dollars, which stands in stark contrast to the 1990s and 2000s when this figure regularly topped 250 billion U.S. dollars. In 2020, there were more than 1,300 deals completed in this sector.
