Size of forested areas converted to state forests in Indonesia 2014-2018
In 2018, approximately 0.36 million hectares of forest became state forest area in Indonesia. Indonesia's total state forest area amounted to 88.42 million hectares as of December 2018. Once a land area is established as a state forest, the government bans any land conversion or obtaining title for private ownership over these lands without written permit and agreement from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry. State forest areas usually include cities, towns, villages, and settlements, including customary land claims of indigenous peoples.
