In 2018, approximately 76 thousand hectares of forest were authorized by the government to be used for non-forestry activities, such as mining, infrastructure building, and military activities. Until 2018, the Indonesian government had authorized around seven million hectares of forest for non-forestry activities. Indonesia has had one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, with more than 74 million hectares of rainforest burned or degraded in the last 50 years.
