In 2018, approximately 168.6 thousand hectares of forest were authorized by the government to be temporarily used for a survey or exploration for mining purposes. Until 2018, the Indonesian government had authorized almost 4.5 million hectares of forest for this purpose. Indonesia has had one of the highest rates of deforestation in the world, with more than 74 million hectares of rainforest burned or degraded in the last 50 years.
