Number of successful grants of humanitarian status in Italy 2012-2020

In 2020, Italy granted the humanitarian status to roughly 6.3 thousand migrants. In the same year, the number of rejected asylum applications amounted to about 14 thousand. In total, approximately 27 thousand asylum requests were submitted in the country in that year.
Data related to the nationality of asylum seekers shows that Nigeria was the most common country of origin of asylum seekers in Italy in March 2021.

It includes persons who are not eligible for international protection as currently defined in the Qualifications Directive (Directive 2011/95/EU) but are nonetheless protected against removal under the obligations that are imposed on all Member States by international refugee or human rights instruments or on the basis of principles flowing from such instruments.
