Argentina: share of femicides 2019-2020, by location

Of the 162 women who were victims of femicide in Argentina in the first five months of 2020, the majority (70 percent) were murdered at the victim's home. This figure has increased in comparison to the previous year when it registered 63 percent of femicides in the victim's home. Since the COVID-19 outbreak, the government of Argentina imposed a nationwide lockdown in efforts to halt the spread of the virus. In this context, the share of femicide cases increased inside the home and decreased in public spaces in comparison to 2019.

In addition, during lockdowns there has been a growth in domestic violence and sexual abuse reports in Latin America, where Argentina has reported a 70 percent increase in phone calls to the family violence helpline in April of 2020.
