Forecasted impact of COVID-19 on retail businesses in the Netherlands 2017-2020

In May 2020, retail business owners had mostly negative expectations of their financial future and the economic climate in which they would operate in the next three months. A widespread economic forecast survey revealed that the balance of positive versus negative prognoses was -12 percent, indicating that there were more negative than positive responses. This data stands in stark contrast to the survey results of May 2017, 2018, and 2019, when economic outlooks were generally positive. The main reason for the rise of this financial insecurity was the COVID-19 outbreak in the Netherlands, which had devastating effects on the retail industry.
