As of 2022, just under 20 percent of retailers in the Netherlands were located in secondary shopping areas around the country. With nearly 45 percent, the lion's share was located in central shopping areas, such as malls or main streets.

Central shopping area (centraal winkelgebied): main shopping area in a place. Secondary shopping area (ondersteunende winkelgebied): other shopping areas of less importance. Outside the shopping area (verspreide bewinkeling): shops located outside a shopping area. Other: special shopping areas, such as outlet centers or airport shopping areas. Five or more retailers with an average shop floor area of over 500 square meters.
