Support for sports teams changing Native American imagery in the U.S. 2021
The Washington Redskins are a professional football team that competes in the National Football League (NFL). Established in 1932 as the Boston Braves, the team changed its name to the ‘Redskins’ the following year, and moved to Washington D.C. in 1937. In July 2020, following increasing pressure from fans and sponsors, the Washington Redskins announced that they would change their name as the term 'Redskins' was seen as disrespectful toward Native Americans and other people of color. During a March 2021 survey in the United States, 24 percent of respondents strongly agreed that sports teams such as the Washington Football Team did the right thing by changing their name and imagery.
