GEM Partners in August 2020, around 11 percent of respondents in Japan believed that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics would still be held as planned in the next year despite the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The ratio decreased by about two percent compared to the previous survey in July. As a direct impact of COVID-19, the Japanese government announced the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games from July 2020 to July 2021, retaining the name as Tokyo 2020.
