According to a survey conducted by GEM Partners in December 2020, around 21 percent of respondents in Japan believed that the Tokyo 2020 Olympics would still be held as planned in 2021 despite the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic. The ratio increased by about 10 percent compared to the previous survey in August. As a direct impact of COVID-19, the Japanese government announced the postponement of the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games from July 2020 to July 2021, retaining the name as Tokyo 2020.
