In 2019, works of art created by Yayoi Kusama generated around 13.7 million U.S. dollars at auctions conducted in Japan, which was by far the highest turnover among Japanese artists during that year. Born in 1929 in Japan, Kusama has created various types of contemporary art, from sculptures and installations to painting and performing art. The artist also gained international popularity and received the Ordre des Arts et des Letters from the French Minister of Culture in 2003.
