With over 6.5 million monthly downloads in May 2021, Tinder is the most downloaded dating application in the world. First released in April 2012, the American company introduced the swiping model, with people anonymously indicating who they are interested in. Once two individuals are a “match”, they can text and initiate a date.

What apps do users download?

Badoo and Bumble ranked second and third, with over 3.9 million and close to 1.7 million monthly downloads respectively. Last on the list was the Russian-developed dating app 2Steps, which was downloaded approximately nine thousand times in the examined period. Another list Tinder topped was the ranking of dating apps by revenue. In May 2021, the company generated a monthly in-app-purchase revenue of more than 65 million U.S. dollars. Here, Bumble and Badoo came in the second and seventh position, generating close to 20 million U.S. dollars, and 5.7 million U.S. dollars in revenue respectively.

Online dating platforms in the United States

As of October 2019, half of the Americans who had used online dating apps or websites during the past week said that they resorted to Tinder. In comparison, a quarter of respondents preferred using PlentyofFish. According to a survey conducted in May 2020, nearly a quarter of single internet users who are interested in online dating in the United States and the United Kingdom claimed that they would be likely to try online games setup for dating. On the other hand, organized online speed dating events were found interesting by 13 percent of the respondents.
