In financial year 2016, about 59 percent of protein consumed in a day by urban adults from central India was from cereals and millets. However, only 42 percent of protein was consumed from cereals and millets by south Indians.
Protein consumption
Proteins comprise of a series of important amino acids which are the building blocks of life. The Indian diet is rich in carbohydrate but often lacks the dietary requirement of protein. The daily average protein consumption in India is significantly lower than that recommended by the Indian Council of Medical Research.
Protein paradox
While a majority of Indians were aware of the existence of proteins, the knowledge of their sources (674343) in Indian households was alarmingly low. That, compounded with the lack of knowledge of the actual benefits of including protein in adequate quantities is what results in low intake. In addition, myths and misconceptions of this macronutrient linked to changes in weight have diluted the value of protein. Further, studies indicate that a majority of mothers living in urban areas identified pulses and milk and dairy products as the only two major sources of protein in the Indian diet.
