Individual company stocks was the most traded investment type in new accounts that were opened in the United States during 2020. This was the case among both new investors and experienced entrants, as 64 percent of the investments traded by new investors were individual company stocks. Among experienced entrants this share was even higher, reaching 68 percent. The second and third most commonly traded investment types were mutual funds and exchange-traded funds (ETFs).
