In 2021, the box office revenue in English-speaking West Africa amounted to five billion Naira, some 12.1 million U.S. dollars. Compared to 2019, the revenue increased by 58 percent in Naira and by 62 percent in U.S. dollars. In the same year, Nollywood movies accounted for the largest share of revenue generated by this industry. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, cinemas closed. In Nigeria, they reopened in September 2020. Overall in anglophone West-Africa, Nigeria accounted for the largest share of revenue generated by this industry.
