The COVID-19 pandemic, which first hit Italy in late February 2020, had a massive impact on life in the country. The measures adopted by the Italian government to control the contagion pushed many businesses to stop or radically scale down their activities. A survey conducted in April 2021 investigated why self-employed workers were considering shutting down their businesses. According to its results, the pandemic deepened existing adversities for around 31 percent of the respondents. Moreover, roughly 26 percent of them faced a recession in their industry, from which they might not recover.
