As of 2021, approximately 12.3 thousand criminals in Japan were members of a crime syndicate, while another 11.9 thousand were associated with said syndicates. While the number of associate members experienced a surge and peaked at about 43.3 thousand in 2007, the number of proper members remained on its general downward course, and both declined significantly in the subsequent years.
