Number of social media users in Egypt 2022, by platform

As of May 2022, Facebook was the most popular social media platform in Egypt with its users counting as high as 56.2 million, an increase by roughly five million users from April 2022. Facebook Messenger and Instagram followed with the number of accounts amounting to 49.3 million and close to 18.2 million, respectively.

Uprisings starting via social media and a boom in internet users

Social media played a role in the 2011 Egyptian revolution. In January 2011, protests against the government took place in the country after a call on social media platforms. In response, the government decided to shut down the internet in an attempt to contain the movement. The mass demonstrations ended with the ousting of President Mohamed Hosni Mubarak 18 days later. Notably, the number of internet users in the country jumped from 14.3 million in 2010 to 57.1 million in 2021.

Internet connectivity through mobile phones

The most common means to access the internet in Egypt was through mobile devices in 2021. Around 42 million people used mobile phones for internet connectivity, while nearly eight million had an ADSL subscription. Furthermore, smartphone users in the country followed an incrementing trend. In 2021, nearly 51.1 million were using a smartphone and the number was estimated to reach around 69 million in 2025.
