Distribution of moviegoers in China 2021, by city tier
In 2021, almost half of the moviegoers in China lived in cities of the third tier and below, representing a considerable increase from 39 percent in 2015. To seek further growth outside the saturated higher-tier market, cinema operators have been eyeing consumers in less-developed cities and townships. About 60 percent of new cinemas were located in these lower-tier regions.
