Monkeypox cases in Europe 2023

As of October 9, 2023, 40 countries across Europe had reported confirmed cases of monkeypox. So far, 7,611 cases have been confirmed in Spain, while 4,158 cases have been confirmed in France. In July 2022, the outbreak of monkeypox was declared to be a public health emergency by the World Health Organization.

A confirmed cases defined by the ECDC is "A person with a laboratory-confirmed monkeypox infection with either
- monkeypox virus specific PCR assay positive result or
- orthopoxvirus specific PCR assay positive result which is then confirmed by nucleotide sequence determination of the detected virus as MPXV with symptom onset since March 1, 2022."
