Types of online harassment reported by journalists in Canada 2021
While online harassment is a risk for anyone active online, journalists are often victims of such behavior. In 2021, 33 percent of Canadian journalists who reported experiencing harassment online said that it involved receiving sexualized messages or images, 30 percent received physical threats, while 23 percent received comments related to gender identity, and 18 percent said that comments were made related to their ethnicity or nationality. 13 percent received death threats, and 10 percent said their identity or private information was exposed. A total of nine percent said threats were made towards their family and seven percent experienced threats of blackmail.
