North America: public transport agencies using electronic/mechanical farebox, by mode
As of 2022, the general trend is the greater availability of electronic fareboxes than mechanical ones on public transportation vehicles. This is exemplified in the figures regarding bus and commuter bus, with 78.8 and 95.8 percent of transit agencies, respectively offering electronic fareboxes, and 12.5 and 16.7 percent, respectively, for mechanical fareboxes. Some modes of transport like trolleybus and streetcar railway offer no mechanical fareboxes. And some, like commuter rail and cable car, use other methods like electronic turnstiles or proof of payment that is checked on vehicle by a transit employee.
