Japan: number of employees at foreign affiliates by industry type

In the fiscal year 2021, foreign affiliates of Japanese companies in the manufacturing industry recorded around 4.2 million employees. The total number of employees working for overseas affiliated companies of Japanese corporations increased to 5.7 million.

Foreign affiliates are defined as:

1.) A foreign affiliate in which a Japanese corporation has invested capital of 10 percent or more.
2.) A foreign affiliate in which a "subsidiary," funded more than 50 percent by a Japanese corporation, has invested capital of more than 50 percent.
3.) A foreign affiliate in which a Japanese corporation and a subsidiary funded more than 50 percent by a Japanese corporation have invested capital of more than 50 percent.
