Crackers are known for their distinct characteristics - usually thin, crispy, dry, savory or well-seasoned. They are defined as baked goods made out of grain flour and belong to the snack food category. Crackers can be enjoyed alone or served as an appetizer alongside other foods such as cheese, dips or other varieties of finger foods. Some people like plain crackers as an ideal accompaniment to wine tastings due to their palate cleansing attributes.

In the U.S. retail snack food aisle, consumers can pick between leading cracker brands such as ‘Sunshine Cheez-It’, ‘Nabisco Ritz’, or ‘Pepperidge Farm Goldfish’. Crackers come in a large variety of shapes and sizes, for example, Sunshine Cheez-It crackers are baked as rectangular-shaped crackers by the Keebler Company, which was acquired by the Kellogg Company in 2001. The multinational Kellogg Company is based in Battle Creek, Michigan, United States. Each cracker variety of Sunshine Cheez-it's large product portfolio contains mainly enriched wheat flour, vegetable oil, the respective type of cheese, salt and seasoning. The original Cheez-It cracker was introduced in 1921 by the Green and Green company of Dayton Ohio. Through a series of corporate acquisitions and transactions the Keebler Company has owned the brand since 1996.
