The workforce of not-for-profit theaters in the United States declined sharply in 2020 and 2021 over the previous years due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic. Overall, the total personnel of not-for-profit theaters in the U.S. decreased from roughly 145 thousand in 2019 to around 36 thousand in 2021. Over the same period, the number of employed artists fell by 73 percent.
