The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic hit the U.S. entertainment industry hard in 2020. That year, theatre, music venues, and similar cultural institutions had to stay close for several weeks due to emergency restrictions implemented to limit the spread of the virus. As a result, the average annual expenditure on plays, theater, opera, and concerts per consumer unit in the United States experienced a sharp drop in 2020 over the previous year. Overall, the country's average expenditure on such cultural activities amounted to 20.61 U.S. dollars in 2020, the lowest figure recorded since 2013.
